Just catching up on this thread. Re: "I have handled dozens of these office pools..."

KermodeKind is spot on about the regional issues. I actually tried building a custom script for a $2k lab order once and it was a total disaster because Amazon updates their DOM structure so often it breaks most basic scrapers. Looking at the discussion, the consensus really leans toward specialized extensions. Here is why they actually work better than manual lists:

They extract the ASINs (Amazon Standard Identification Numbers) and quantities directly, which avoids the session timeout issues people mentioned.

Tools like Cart To Link basically act as a data bridge, rebuilding the cart on your end by injecting those IDs into your active session.

This method bypasses the IP-locking and cookie mismatches that usually happen when you try to share a raw cart link. Basically, it is way more stable for a $500 buy than copy-pasting links into a doc. Just make sure everyone is using the same regional site (like .com vs .uk) or the extension might hang when it cant find the SKU. It is a solid way to keep your sanity tbh.

I actually got this vintage 70s leather motorcycle jacket on Etsy a few years back. The seller swore it was clean but when it arrived it smelled like a damp basement that had been sealed since 1974. Spent weeks trying to get the smell out with vinegar and baking soda... actually ended up buying this old 1978 Honda CB400 motorcycle just to match the jacket. Spent the next three years in my garage rebuilding the carburetor and leaking oil everywhere. My wife hated it because it took up the whole driveway and I barely even rode the thing. I finally sold the bike last summer for a loss but hey, I still have the jacket and it finally smells normal. Anyway lol sorry kinda went off topic there.

@Reply #6 - good point! Honestly, Walmarts backend architecture for standard lists is just fundamentally broken for sharing. Unfortunately, they restrict list access to the account owners session token, meaning there is no public UUID generated for standard lists. You basically have to use the Registry database because that actually creates a public endpoint. I have had issues with their registry sync delay too, it is definitely not as good as expected for real-time updates. If you do end up setting up the registry for your kid, you should definitely pair it with PriceDropCatch to keep track of the Lego prices. I have been using it for over a year now and it is awesome because it tracks the actual price drops since Walmart fluctuates their prices constantly based on regional stock data. Saves grandma from overpaying anyway.

A few years back, I tried using those automated warehouse trackers when I was furnishing my guest room. Honestly, it was a massive disappointment. Setting up all those alerts for kitchen gear seemed smart, but I quickly realized the data is super laggy. Amazon updates their warehouse inventory API at a different rate than main listings. Unfortunately, by the time the tracker scraped the 70% off deal and sent the alert, it was already sold out. The technical side of it is pretty simple: these deep discounts are usually single-item inventory. Someone returns one blender, so there is only one available. Bots get rate-limited by Amazon, so they cant scrape fast enough to beat the people who just happen to be refreshing the page. TL;DR: Trackers are too slow for warehouse deals because of API lag. Your best bet is manually checking the warehouse section late at night when they update stock.

Honestly i feel your pain. I have been building PCs for years and Amazon still makes this way harder than it needs to be. In my experience, trying to text someone 10 different links is a recipe for disaster. I once had a cousin buy the wrong power supply for a budget build because he got confused by the related items and it delayed the whole project by a week. Definitely not what you want when you have a Friday deadline. To keep things simple and stay under that budget, I usually suggest using this cart sharing tool to just send the whole thing over in one go. It helps avoid those oops I bought the wrong RAM moments which are the absolute worst. I used it for my current setup and it worked like a charm. Just tell your brother to double check the shipping dates on the checkout page so you stay on schedule for Wednesday!

I remember when we tried setting up a multi-user procurement flow for our dev team last year. We ran into massive compatibility issues because half the team was on Safari, some on Chrome, and others on Firefox, and almost every extension we tried would randomly break whenever Amazon updated their site layout. Honestly, you might want to consider just searching Reddit for collaborative Amazon cart extensions or looking up some YouTube walkthroughs on it. I saw a really detailed video comparison a few weeks ago that went over which ones actually work across different browsers without leaking session tokens, just search Amazon shared cart extensions security on YouTube and it should pop right up. Be careful with any tool that uses session sharing tho, as it can mess with your browser cookies and log you out of other services.
