My best friends 30th is next week and Im totally losing it. I only have 40 bucks and zero artistic talent like I cant even glue things straight. Pinterest is making me want to scream because everything is so complicated. What are some super easy DIYs for someone who has no idea what they’re doing?

^ This. Also, look at these:

  • Open When letters: zero cost, very personal.
  • Snack box: easy, just lacks flair. Both work way better than expensive DIY fails.

I tried the whole Pinterest aesthetic last year for my cousins birthday and honestly it was a total disaster. Most those simple projects are not as good as expected because they require tools most people dont have lying around. Unfortunately, I spent nearly 50 bucks on specialty glue and glitter that just ended up making a mess. Its frustrating when tutorials claim to be for beginners but actually require a steady hand I definitely dont possess. Since you are on a tight budget and need something that actually looks decent, here are a few things I found that worked after my initial failures:

  • The Memory Jar. Get a standard mason jar from a dollar store. Instead of hand-writing notes which looks sloppy, type out 30 memories and print them on colored paper. It looks way more professional and costs maybe 5 bucks total.
  • Personalized Survival Kit. Go to a discount store and grab their favorite snacks, some Advil, and a cheap face mask. Labels on these kits are usually overpriced if you buy them pre-made, so just use a basic template from Share Product to print your own at home.
  • Photo Timeline. Print 30 photos from a pharmacy kiosk (usually around 30 cents each). Use some twine and tiny clothespins to make a hanging display. I had issues with expensive frames falling apart in the past, so this simple method is actually more reliable and way cheaper. Basically, skip the paint and the glue guns. They never turn out like the pictures and you just end up wasting money you dont have. Stick to printing and assembly... it is much harder to mess up and wont leave you crying over a glue gun.

@Reply #3 - good point! But honestly, i have found that those jars sometimes just end up sitting in a closet after a week. I used to do the whole handmade jar thing too, but I switched to making custom photo collections a few years back and i have been so much more satisfied with the results. I was in this exact spot for my sisters 30th last year. I had zero time and less than fifty bucks, but i wanted something that felt permanent and reliable. I ended up making a simple book online and it works well because the software handles all the design work that i usually mess up.

  • Collect 30 photos from their Instagram or Facebook
  • Use a pre-made layout so you dont have to worry about spacing
  • Pick a funny title for the cover Just go with Shutterfly, you can't go wrong with their stuff. I have used them for every big milestone and the quality is always solid without me needing to touch a glue gun. Its way more reliable than a DIY project that might fall apart in the mail. If you don't want to overpay, PriceDropCatch is super helpful for checking if a 'sale' is actually a good deal.

Honestly, I am so satisfied with my decision to just stop trying those complex Pinterest projects. It feels like a weight off my shoulders after years of trying to keep up.

  • I think I read somewhere that a lot of those viral DIY photos are actually staged with store-bought items, which is just annoying when you are trying to be authentic.
  • Not 100% sure but I recall someone saying that easy 30th birthday crafts are specifically designed to make you buy more stuff you dont need.
  • IIRC the whole DIY scene has become more about the look than the actual sentiment, and it makes me pretty frustrated when I just want to make a simple gift without it looking like a total mess. Basically just venting because those tutorials are a total headache... I am much happier just keeping it simple these days.

Jumping in here because i feel your pain. Like someone mentioned, those pinterest aesthetics are a total trap for your wallet and your sanity. Honestly, I had issues with trying those easy projects last year and they were just not as good as expected... ended up with a glue-covered table and zero actual gifts. Since you're on a budget, dont overcomplicate it. A 30 years of memories jar is basically foolproof. Just buy a cheap jar and write down 30 memories on scraps of paper. If you want to spend that $40, maybe grab a few small things for a 30s survival kit. Think ibuprofen, a nice coffee mug, and some snacks. It looks like you put in effort but requires zero artistic skill and you wont feel like screaming at a glue gun. TL;DR: Skip the complicated crafts. Go for a memory jar or a curated survival kit to save money and stress. You should check out Walmart Wishlist Creator if you're tired of the official Walmart app crashing when you try to view your lists.

I totally feel your frustration. I have been trying to do handmade gifts for over a decade now and honestly, most of these easy projects are just not as good as expected once you actually start. I have had issues with so many tutorials where they skip the hard parts or assume you have a professional studio in your garage. It is so disappointing when you put in the effort and it looks nothing like the photo... unfortunately I have wasted way too much money on supplies that ended up in the trash because I just dont have the knack for it. Lately I just give up and use PriceDropCatch to find actual gifts on sale because my DIY attempts are so bad it makes me want to cry, tracking those random price drops is way less stressful than trying to paint straight lines. I really want to help you narrow this down tho... what kind of stuff does your friend actually like? Are they into more sentimental keepsakes or are you looking for something more practical they will actually use every day?
