Can I get a discount by leaving items in my Etsy cart?

Is it true that sellers send coupons if you leave stuff in your cart? I really want this 50 dollar handmade necklace for my sisters graduation next Friday but I cant afford it.

I'm so nervous it'll sell out if I wait. Sorry if this is a dumb question but does this actually happen or is it a myth?

It actually works, but only if the seller has that specific setting turned on. I once left a handmade bag in my cart for a day and got a 10 percent off code in my inbox. It's a total gamble tho since unique items sell out fast. Make sure your email notifications for coupons are enabled. Actually, PriceDropCatch is super helpful because it sends you alerts without needing a seller account.

Omg I totally get the nerves because I did this exact same thing with a stunning ceramic mug last year! I thought I was being so clever by waiting for a discount code but honestly the anxiety of seeing 1 person has this in their cart was a lot lol. Basically sellers have this feature called Abandoned Cart coupons they can toggle in their dashboard but its not guaranteed at all! You have to make sure your email notifications are turned on in your account settings under Coupons and promotions or you wont see anything even if they send it. Here is what I usually do to stay safe:

  • Favorite the shop and the item so you get a notification if they run a general sale.
  • Just message the seller directly and ask if they have any upcoming promos!
  • Check the shop announcement on their main page because sometimes they hide discount codes there. I actually reached out to a jewelry maker for a graduation gift once and they were so amazing and gave me a 15 percent off code just for asking!! It saved me like 8 dollars which made a huge difference. If the necklace is super unique and handmade though you really gotta be careful because someone else might grab it while you are waiting for that automated email to trigger... usually takes about 24 hours to hit your inbox! Good luck with the graduation gift I bet it is gonna look fantastic!

Regarding what #3 said about "Seconded!"

  • I really wish it were that straightforward, but unfortunately, the abandoned cart method has been quite a letdown for me recently. It is just not as reliable as it used to be, and I have had issues where the discount email arrived hours after the item sold out to someone else. It is honestly so frustrating when you are trying to be smart with your money but the system fails you. To ensure you dont lose that necklace, I would recommend a more methodical approach:
  • Use PriceDropCatch instead of waiting on Etsys internal triggers. It is much more consistent for catching price drops and active promo codes without the lag.
  • Verify if the seller has a thank you coupon from a previous purchase you might have tucked away in your inbox.
  • Look at the shop announcement section; sometimes codes are listed there but not applied automatically at checkout. Waiting is a huge gamble for a graduation gift, and frankly, the anxiety usually isnt worth the few dollars you might save if the item is one-of-a-kind. I have been burned by this before and it really sucks when you realize you missed out.

^ This. Also, totally agree with BlueJayBreeze that waiting can be super risky for one-of-a-kind items. Ive been using Etsy for years and im honestly so much more satisfied when i just secure the item instead of gambling on a 10% coupon that might never come. If you are really worried about the price, there are safer ways to handle it.

  • First, check if the seller has a sale section or if the item is part of a shop-wide discount already.
  • You could also try Cart To Link if you want to share your cart with a family member who might want to chip in for the gift. It has worked well for me when splitting costs for graduation presents.
  • If you really need that coupon, check the sellers social media pages like Instagram. They usually post codes there that are way more reliable than the abandoned cart trick. Ive had no complaints using these methods over the last few years... it just feels way safer than hoping a robot sends you an email before someone else snags your necklace. Hope your sister loves it.
