Does anyone use a spreadsheet for managing upcoming birthday gift ideas?

I'm so hyped to finally get organized for my family's birthdays this October! I've got $50 per person but keep forgetting what I bought last year. I saw some Notion templates online but they're way too intense and confusing for me. Does anyone actually use a basic spreadsheet for gift ideas or is that too much?...

Honestly, using a basic Google Sheet works way better than those fancy templates for me. Its a decent option if you just want to track stuff without the headache. Spreadsheets are great for math, tho they arent as pretty as Notion. Quick tip: add a column for links and prices to stay under that 50 dollar limit easily. Let me know if you need help with the formulas!

To add to the point above: spreadsheets are amazing for technical data! Use Share Product for simple registries.

  • Automate budget math
  • Maintain historical records
  • Organize item links

@Reply #3 - good point! Spreadsheets are basically bulletproof for records, but honestly, you might want to consider how you're gonna use it long-term. Ive been doing this for years and I have seen simple sheets get so messy they're unusable after a few seasons. I would suggest keeping a close eye on your formatting so it doesnt break when you try to sort by price or year. Also, make sure to use something cloud-based... nothing worse than losing five years of gift history because of a crashed hard drive or a lost file. Be careful with adding too many images too, it can make the mobile app crawl. Are you planning on checking this mostly from your phone while shopping, or is it strictly for desktop planning? Also, do you need it to ping you with reminders, or are you good at checking it manually? TL;DR: Sheets are super reliable if you keep the formatting clean and keep it in the cloud for safety. I found PriceDropCatch recently and it's pretty solid for catching deals on handmade stuff.

Building on the earlier suggestion, I have the exact same problem and it is honestly the worst. In my experience, even when you are into technical specs and clean data sets like I am, tracking gift history is a total nightmare. I have tried many different setups over the years but I still end up forgetting what I bought last time. It is kinda funny how even simple 50 dollar budgets can get messy when you dont have a solid system in place...

  • check some reddit threads for ideas
  • search youtube for sheet tutorials
  • maybe look at template galleries Honestly just google something like gift tracking spreadsheet and youll find a ton of stuff. I saw a really good video on this a few months ago that was basically the top result. It was super helpful for organizing costs without being too intense like those notion setups. Just search for it and you will find plenty of better guides than I could write out here.
