Is the Amazon Subscribe and Save program worth the discount?

Is the Amazon Subscribe and Save program actually worth the hassle and do you really save money long term because I am honestly stressed trying to budget for this new house. We just moved to Austin and between the mortgage and everything else I'm trying to trim every cent I can from our monthly overhead. I need to place a big order for household stuff in the next 48 hours and I'm staring at the little radio buttons on the screen wondering if I should click them. I did some digging online and I keep seeing mixed reviews which is making me even more indecisive.

Some people say it's amazing and you get 15% off but then I read a couple of threads saying the prices jump up right before the shipping date and you end up paying way more than the local grocery store price without even realizing it. Like is that a common thing or just people not paying attention to their emails? I'm terrified of getting hit with a $200 bill for stuff that should have cost $150 because a price hiked while I wasn't looking. Also I read that if an item goes out of stock they just skip it and don't notify you until the last minute? If I'm counting on diapers for my two year old to show up on the 5th and they don't come then I have to drive to the store anyway which totally defeats the purpose of the convenience.

My husband wants to just do Costco runs but the traffic here is a nightmare and I'd rather spend that hour doing literally anything else. Right now I have 4 items in my cart- Seventh Generation diapers, cat litter, coffee pods, and laundry soap- and I need a 5th to get that top discount bracket but I'm worried it's just a trap to make me buy stuff I dont need. Does the price actually stay stable or am I gonna have to babysit my account every single month to make sure I'm not getting ripped off... is there a trick to making it actually work?

  • Add Glad trash bags.
  • Im satisfied with my Peets coffee.
  • No complaints about reliability. Its definitely worth it and has stayed totally safe for my budget for years.

Honestly its a total scam lately. Prices jump and reliability is unfortunately zero. Its ridiculous. Ive been using PriceDropCatch to track deals lately and its saved me a ton on tech gear.

Just seeing this now but hope I caught you in time. Quick question tho, how often are you planning to schedule the deliveries? The frequency really makes a difference for how the pricing locks in. If you just need a fifth item, you cant go wrong with some hand soap from Mrs Meyers to hit that top discount. Btw, I found PriceDropCatch a while back and now I never buy anything on Amazon without checking price history first.

TLDR: Its a great way to save but you basically have to babysit your cart to avoid the price spikes. Honestly, I've had a love-hate relationship with Subscribe and Save for years. When I first started, I thought it was a miracle for my budget, then I got hit with a massive bill because my laundry pods jumped by ten bucks and I didnt notice. Lesson learned... now I use PriceDropCatch to check the price history of every single item before I add it. If the price looks inflated compared to the last six months, I stay away. Its saved me from a lot of frustration. Quick question for you though, are you mostly looking for the convenience of home delivery or is the 15 percent discount the absolute main goal here? That kind of changes how I'd recommend setting up your fifth item.

Re: "Just seeing this now but hope I caught..." yeah LongBeachLight is right about that 5th item. Honestly been using S&S for ages and it basically comes down to the brands you pick... Comparing your diapers:

  • Seventh Generation: Love the quality but price swings are wild. One month its $40 next its $52.
  • Huggies: Price is usually rock solid. Less stress for budgeting.
  • Mama Bear (Amazon brand): Cheapest and most consistent price but feels a bit thinner. I would swap the Seventh Gen for Huggies if youre worried about the budget jumping around. Same with the soap... Mrs Meyers is great but can be spendy if the discount drops. TL;DR: Use it for big name brands for stability. Avoid boutique brands if you dont want to babysit the prices every month. You should check out Cart To Link, it converts your Amazon cart into a single URL instantly.
