What are the best strategies for finding clearance sales on Etsy?

How do you guys actually track down clearance sections or deep discounts on Etsy since the search filters are so hit or miss lately? I've been a regular buyer for years—mostly looking for vintage leather goods or those chunky handmade ceramic mugs for my little boutique in Portland—and I usually pride myself on finding the best deals. But lately, it feels like the search results are totally cluttered with sponsored listings that aren't even on sale, or shops that mark something down by like 5% and call it a clearance.

I'm trying to put together these custom gift baskets for a cousin's wedding in October and I've got a strict budget of around $250 for about 20 small items. I really need to find those 50-70% off liquidations where sellers are just trying to clear out old inventory to make room for new stuff. I tried using the on sale toggle but it's honestly useless now because it shows way too much junk. I used to search for moving sale or shop closing but even that is getting gamed by bigger sellers lately. Is there a trick to finding the actual deep markdowns or maybe a way to see shop-wide clearances specifically? I tried looking through the updates tab on my phone but it only shows shops I already follow... which doesnt help when Im looking for new sources.

Searching destash or inventory blowout works better than that sale toggle. It is a decent option for finding real liquidations without the junk. Let me know if you need more help!

I totally agree that keywords like destash are the best bet, but unfortunately, the search reliability has been pretty disappointing lately. I have had issues with listings appearing that aren't even relevant, which makes it way harder to stay on budget. It is just not as good as expected these days, honestly. A couple of things I usually try to keep it safe:

  • Message the shop owners directly about bulk pricing since you need 20 items.
  • Check for shops that offer free shipping over 35 dollars so those ceramic costs dont kill your margin.
  • Look for the word seconds in ceramic listings to find those deep discounts on minor defects. Quick question tho... is that 250 budget meant to include the shipping fees? Also, are you looking for 20 matching mugs or a mix of different styles? Shipping heavy stuff like leather and clay can really bite into your funds if you arent careful.

Re: Searching destash or inventory blowout works better than...

  • honestly that is exactly how I scored a massive box of hand-thrown ceramic seconds for my garden party last year. I agree 100% because those specific keywords attract the genuine hobbyists who just want the space back. I am so satisfied with the deals I've grabbed that way. One little secret that works well for me is using PriceDropCatch. It is a free tool for your browser that actually tracks the price history for you. It is super helpful for weeding out the shops that just fake a sale by raising the price then 'discounting' it back to normal. If you are doing wedding baskets, definitely try searching for retired styles too. I found a shop doing a huge liquidation on their leather keychain line just by looking for that specific phrase. It definitely takes more digging but the payoff is so worth it when you find those 60% off gems.
