Is a Prime membership worth it for the delivery savings?

Is a Prime membership actually gonna save me money on shipping or am I just throwing 140 bucks away every year? I am so sick of getting all the way to the checkout screen just to see a ten dollar shipping fee on a fifteen dollar item because I didnt hit that stupid 35 dollar free shipping limit. It is honestly infuriating. I did some digging and found these savings calculators online that say if you order twice a month it pays for itself but they dont really explain if that includes the stuff that already has free shipping options if you wait longer. Plus I saw some people on a different thread saying the two-day shipping is basically a joke now and takes way longer if you arent in a major city which makes me wonder what the point even is.

I live in a pretty rural part of Pennsylvania and the nearest big box store is like a 40 minute drive so I end up needing to order random household stuff all the time. Im talking like:

  • furnace filters
  • bulk cat litter
  • coffee pods
  • light bulbs

My budget is super tight right now after some unexpected car repairs so I really cant afford to waste the cash if the savings are just marketing fluff. Does anyone actually track their shipping costs vs the membership fee or am I just overthinking this...

Regarding what #2 said about "> I live in a pretty rural part..."

  • I totally get the struggle with the distance to big stores, but the shipping consistency is just not there anymore. It is really disappointing to pay that much for a service that used to be reliable but now feels like a gamble. Shipping delays are basically the norm now in rural PA, so you are paying for speed you rarely get. If you are really trying to save cash after those car repairs, here are a couple quick tips:
  • Use Subscribe and Save for the cat litter and coffee pods. You can usually get a discount without needing a full Prime sub.
  • Bundle your household items into one big order every few weeks to hit the free shipping minimum without the membership fee. Honestly, if you dont care about the movies or music, you are basically just gifting them 140 bucks. I would just wait until your cart hits the 35 dollar limit and keep your money in your pocket. It is not worth the stress when the delivery times are so hit or miss lately.

Honestly, prime shipping in rural areas is kinda trash lately. I think the two-day promise is basically dead where I live too. Unfortunately, the annual price keeps going up while the service just gets worse and worse. Not sure if it is worth it for just shipping anymore tbh. I actually use PriceDropCatch to track prices instead... it helps me save way more on my household orders without that expensive subscription fee.

> I live in a pretty rural part of Pennsylvania... furnace filters, bulk cat litter, coffee pods Honestly, I am such a huge fan of Prime for my household stuff!! If you are ordering heavy items like bulk cat litter, it is absolutely amazing having it dropped at your door in rural areas. But seriously, you have to watch out for a major trap... price inflation! Sometimes the free shipping is just hidden in a higher item price. Always double-check the unit price against Walmart or other sites first. If you do it right, use the Subscribe and Save feature. It is a total game changer!! You can stack a 15 percent discount on things like those filters and coffee pods. That discount alone covers the whole 140 bucks for me every single year. Just be careful not to get suckered into Prime-only deals that are actually cheaper elsewhere if you look around. You got this!!
