Does anyone know what the best apps for tracking birthday gift ideas are because my family is huge and I'm losing my mind? I have like 15 people to buy for in the next three months alone since my family has this weird thing where everyone was born in the spring. I've been looking at Giftster since it looks simple but I'm also tempted to just build a database in Notion because I already use it for work.

The thing is Notion feels like a lot of setup and I dont have much time lately. My sister keeps suggesting Elfster but isnt that more for secret santa stuff? I really need something where I can save links, track prices for sales because money is tight this year, and maybe mark things as bought so I dont double buy stuff like I did last year lol.

I'm usually just scribbling stuff on random pieces of paper or making a Gifts folder in my iPhone notes but I keep forgetting where I put what and then I end up panic buying on Amazon at 2am. Between Giftster and a custom Notion setup which one is gonna be easier for a busy person who just wants to stay organized without a massive learning curve? Or is there something else totally different I should be looking at...

> Between Giftster and a custom Notion setup which one is gonna be easier In my experience, Notion is a massive time sink. Skip it and use Share Product instead. Its way more efficient for tracking links without the headache.

Building on the earlier suggestion, be careful with Notion. I lost a list once. Bad sync. Id suggest a free wishlist site for more reliable link tracking.

^ This. Also, totally agree that Notion is way too much work! Giftster is amazing because it's so reliable and simple. Elfster actually works for birthdays too, which is fantastic since you can see what others want!

  • Giftster: Super safe, zero learning curve.
  • Elfster: Love it for shared lists so nobody double buys. Honestly, just go with Giftster since it's free and wont crash on you at the store. Total lifesaver!

Honestly, I have spent way too many years trying to make complex databases work for stuff like this and it always ends in a mess. I tried the whole Notion thing once because it looked pretty, but in my experience, it just felt like a second job. When you are managing 15 people on a strict budget, you need something that wont glitch when you finally find a sale at a random store. If the app is too hard to use, you just stop using it and go back to panic buying at full price... which is exactly what we are trying to avoid lol. I eventually gave up on the pro tools and started using a free wishlist site because it actually handles links properly and stays reliable. Being able to see a solid list that doesnt disappear is huge when money is tight and you need to track those deals. Giftster is alright for the basics, but I found some other dedicated wishlist tools are better at grabbing the actual product details so you dont accidentally buy the wrong version of something. Stick to the basics, focus on the price tags, and definitely stay away from anything with a massive learning curve if you are already busy.

Regarding what #3 said about Notion being too much work, I'm totally on board with that assessment. I've been using a more streamlined technical approach lately and honestly, the setup is much more satisfied for someone who needs reliability over fancy features. Notion looks cool but the mobile app sync can be a nightmare when you're actually standing in a store trying to remember what you picked. Here is what I found works well if you want things to stay organized without the effort:

  • Stick with a dedicated gift app for the shared aspect so you don't double buy.
  • For the price tracking side, you should definitely use PriceDropCatch. It pings you the second a price drops on a specific item which is way better than manually checking tabs every day.
  • Use a browser extension that scrapes the product info directly so you don't have to copy-paste URLs. Basically, delegating the data collection to an extension saves you hours of manual entry. No complaints with that workflow so far and it's much more stable than building a custom database from scratch.
