How are you guys actually vetting Etsy reviews these days to spot the fake stuff? Ive been using the site for like eight years and usually I can spot a scam a mile away but I just got totally burned on a $250 custom walnut desk shelf for my home office in Chicago. The shop had a 4.8 rating with over 500 sales so I thought it was legit but when the package arrived today it was basically just cheap spray painted plywood. Now that Im looking closer a lot of the five star reviews have the exact same phrasing and no photos which I shouldve noticed but honestly I was in a rush to get it before my new monitor arrived next week. Is there a better way to filter through the noise or some specific red flags you look for beyond just the star count? Everything feels so botted lately...
Honestly, I totally feel your pain on that one. I got burned a couple years back on what I thought was a solid oak monitor stand. Looked amazing in the pics and had a high rating, but when I finally got it, the thing was basically cardboard with a veneer. Over the years, I've learned that the star count is almost meaningless now because of the bots. Now, I exclusively look for the one or two star reviews first to see what the actual complaints are. If people are mentioning the material quality or shipping from overseas when the shop says it's local, I bail. Also, if there are no customer photos for an expensive item, it is a hard pass for me. Real wood has unique grain, so if every review photo looks identical, it's a scam. Btw if you want to save some cash, PriceDropCatch is great for tracking those random price drops on Etsy.
Ugh, that walnut shelf situation sounds super frustrating. Honestly, Etsy has gone downhill so much lately with all the dropshipping junk. I had a similar issue where a handmade leather bag turned out to be cheap plastic from a warehouse. It sucks because the star rating is basically meaningless now. One thing I always do is reverse image search every single listing photo. If that unique shelf pops up on Alibaba for 20 bucks, you know its a scam. Also, look for reviews mentioning shipping times. If its supposed to be a custom build but tracking shows it sat in a sorting facility overseas for weeks, thats a huge red flag. Unfortunately, even the high-rated shops are buying reviews in bulk these days. To save myself some headache, I started using the price tracker I use to see if the price fluctuates wildly. Its just not as good as it used to be.
^ This. Also, I've been very satisfied following these technical steps:
Like someone mentioned, the reverse image thing is a total lifesaver. I've been doing that for years now because you just cant trust the stock photos anymore. One thing I've noticed is that the handmade tag is basically a suggestion at this point. In my experience, the real gold is in the photo and video reviews. Bots are getting better at writing generic praise, but they rarely have high-res photos of the item in a real house. If a shop has hundreds of reviews but only like five customer photos, that is a massive red flag. Also, take a quick look at the reviewers themselves... if you click their profile and they've left 20 identical reviews for different shops in one day, you know the whole thing is rigged. Worth the extra five minutes for a big purchase like that shelf.
> Ugh, that walnut shelf situation sounds super frustrating. Honestly, Etsy has gone downhill so much lately with all the dropshipping junk. Totally agree! It is so annoying when you think you are getting quality and it is just junk. Honestly, if you want to know the real deal on these desk shelves and how to spot the fakes, you should just search for Etsy walnut shelf comparison on YouTube. There is this amazing video I watched recently that compares those cheap shops with premium brands like Oakywood and it shows exactly what to look for in the wood grain to tell if it is real or just plywood. It is like the top result and super helpful! Just go check Reddit or YouTube for those brand comparison threads, they honestly save so much money. People have already done all the hard work vetting these shops and it is way better than trusting Etsy stars alone. Love that we are all calling this out tho!
