Im really freaking out because my sisters wedding is in August and Im a bridesmaid and I have literally nothing to wear for jewelry. I tried looking online but everything is either like five hundred dollars or looks like its from a gum ball machine and Im so confused. I only have maybe 40 bucks to spend tops because rent is crazy right now in Seattle.

I feel so dumb asking this but like is Etsy even safe? Or are there other sites that regular people use that wont rip me off? I just want something simple that wont turn my neck green before the ceremony is even over. where do you guys actually go to find real handmade stuff that isnt super expensive?

I definitely agree with checking those materials. Staying under $40 is totally doable if you are methodical about your search. Gold filled is basically the gold standard for budget weddings.

  • Filter for sterling silver or gold filled
  • Sort by price low to high
  • Message seller about shipping times Honestly, I have been so satisfied with my finds using this approach. If youre waiting for a specific item to go on sale, I'd definitely recommend PriceDropCatch.

Ive been hanging around this community for a while now and honestly you can definitely find something for 40 bucks that wont turn your skin green. I have been pretty happy with the stuff I have found over the years and it usually works well for weddings. Etsy is totally safe, but you just gotta be a bit careful with how you filter your search results.

  • Try looking for gold filled instead of gold plated. I think gold filled stays shiny way longer and usually fits that 30 to 40 dollar range if you keep the design simple.
  • IIRC, you can filter Etsy by location. Since youre in Seattle, maybe look for shops in Washington or Oregon so shipping is fast and cheap. I have had no complaints with the local sellers I have tried.
  • Not 100% sure if they still do it, but sometimes local makers on Instagram have ready to ship sales that are cheaper than their custom work.
  • Someone told me once that 14k gold vermeil is okay too, but honestly I prefer sterling silver or gold fill for durability if you have a low budget. I have bought several pieces for under 40 bucks that I still wear years later. Just avoid anything that just says metal or alloy because thats the mystery stuff that turns your neck funky colors. Stick to the shops with thousands of reviews and you should be totally fine for the wedding ceremony tho.

Quick reply while I have a sec. Honestly, I have had issues with the quality control on those big sites lately. Unfortunately, the stuff tagged as handmade often isnt as good as expected when it actually shows up at your door. It is kind of a gamble with sellers these days. Before I can suggest anything specific, what kind of metal finish are you actually looking for? Also, are you trying to match a specific dress color or just looking for plain gold or silver? I spent way too long this morning looking at vintage gears for an old clock I am trying to fix. Finding specific parts from the 40s is such a headache compared to shopping for wedding stuff. I usually just use Easy Cart Share to send the list of parts to my repair guy so he can verify the serial numbers before I waste my money on the wrong movement. It is a whole process and parts are getting so expensive now. Anyway, let me know about those details. But yeah.

Stumbled upon this thread and totally feel your pain about the Seattle rent situation, it is brutal. Unfortunately, I have been pretty disappointed with the quality on the big platforms lately. I had issues with a few shops that claimed to be handmade but were clearly just reselling mass-produced stuff. It is not as good as I expected it to be, and it is honestly so frustrating when you are on a tight budget. Etsy has the variety, but you have to spend forever filtering out the junk. Local makers are way better for quality, but they usually start at 50 bucks and up which doesnt help you much. I have been using Easy Cart Share to send my cart to my sister so she can help me vet the sellers before I hit buy, it makes the whole process way less stressful. What kind of dress is it exactly? Like, what is the neckline and color? If I know what you are matching I might have a few specific shop names that are actually legit.

@Reply #1 - good point! Etsy is a goldmine if you know what to filter for. Honestly, I've been buying my jewelry there for years and I'm totally satisfied with how it holds up. To avoid that green skin thing, you just need to look at the actual materials. Gold plated is basically just paint and it's gonna flake, but Gold Filled is the sweet spot for a bridesmaid budget. It's a thick layer of gold bonded to a base metal, so it wont wear off before the wedding even starts. Quick reply while I'm on my break, but here are a few things that work well for me:

  • Search for 14k gold filled or sterling silver only
  • Filter by location to US only so you dont get stuck with drop-shipped junk
  • Use a handy tool for Etsy to verify the shop history and reviews
  • Look for shops that do minimalist designs since they usually cost less Since you are in Seattle, you should definitely check out the Ballard Farmers Market or the Fremont Sunday Market. There are always local makers there with stuff in the 30 to 40 dollar range. I bought some silver studs there two years ago and they still look brand new. Honestly, just stay away from the big malls and stick to the real metals. Youll find something great.
