Ive been using the Walmart app for grocery delivery and pickup for years so I usually know my way around the UI pretty well. My best friend and I are planning this big camping trip out to Big Bend next month and we are trying to coordinate all the gear and bulk snacks we need to buy. Since we are splitting the cost 50/50 I really wanted her to look over the cart before I hit the checkout button to make sure I didnt miss anything or get the wrong brand of dehydrated meals.

I spent like twenty minutes digging through the account settings and the actual cart page looking for a simple share cart link or some kind of collaborative list feature like you see on other sites but I am coming up empty. I tried logging into her phone with my credentials but that felt kinda sketchy with my saved payment info and it kept trying to trigger 2FA on my device which got annoying fast. Is there an actual way to just sync a cart between two separate accounts or even just send a read-only link that actually updates in real-time? I really dont want to have to manually type out fifty items in a text message or keep sending screenshots every time I add a pack of batteries...

Honestly, its pretty frustrating that a company as huge as Walmart still doesnt have a native collaborative cart feature in 2024. Youd think with all that data they collect, theyd realize how much people need this for stuff like camping trips. Unfortunately, the short answer is no, there isnt a magic Share button hidden in the UI. I have spent way too much time digging into their checkout flow for my own projects, and basically, their sessions are tied strictly to the individual account for security and fraud prevention. It is not as good as expected for a tech giant, right? It really kills the vibe when you are trying to plan something big. Heres the best ways I have found to handle this mess:

  • Walmart Lists: In the app, you can create a specific List (not the cart) and share that. She can see the items, but she cant see the actual live cart totals or checkout status in real-time.
  • Third-party tools: You might want to try Share-A-Cart. Its a browser extension that basically bundles your current session into a code she can load on her end. It works okay, but it can be buggy with Walmart because they refresh their page elements so often.
  • Shared Album: Honestly, just making a shared Google Photos album for screenshots is less of a headache than fighting the Walmart 2FA system every five minutes. Its super annoying that we have to jump through these hoops for a basic feature. Definitely not the seamless experience they advertise.

Exactly what I was thinking

Regarding what #1 said about "Honestly, its pretty frustrating that a company as..." I totally agree. In my experience, trying to track camping costs manually is just a recipe for going over budget. Use the Walmart Cart Share extension. It works. It lets you share the whole cart link instantly so your friend can double check those prices... keeps things organized and you wont miss anything.

Be careful with sharing your login details, honestly. I did that once with a cousin for a similar trip and it was a total nightmare... somehow my secondary card got charged for his whole week of groceries and it was so awkward to ask for the money back. You might want to consider just looking for a specific tool to handle it instead. I remember seeing a really solid walkthrough on YouTube about a month ago that showed exactly how to sync these carts up using a browser addon. If you just search for how to share walmart cart link on there, its basically the first result that pops up. It is much safer than risking your account security or dealing with those annoying 2FA codes every ten minutes. Just make sure to read the reviews first to make sure its reliable... I am always a bit paranoid about those things but the one in the video seemed legit.

To add to the point above: I have definitely been down this rabbit hole before when I was prepping for a trip to the Smokies last summer. It is such a headache when you are just trying to coordinate snacks and dont want to buy double of everything. I tried a few DIY ways before I found what actually worked for me.

  • Shared Google Sheets: This is my usual DIY method. You basically just paste links and prices into a shared doc. But you might want to consider the time it takes to update it. It is a total slog if your cart is huge and prices keep changing.
  • Chrome Extensions: I would suggest being really careful with these. They are great for sharing the view, but make sure to double check that your friend doesnt accidentally trigger a checkout or delete things while they are poking around. Some of them can be a bit buggy with real-time updates.
  • Screenshots: Honestly, just dont. I ended up with a massive mess of photos in my gallery and we still managed to forget the beef jerky because it got buried in the chat log. Whatever you pick, just make sure to do a quick final voice call while you are both looking at the screen together. I have had way too many camping trips where we ended up with three bags of marshmallows and no firewood... definitely not a fun time in the dark.
