What should I include on my 21st birthday wishlist besides alcohol?

Ive done wishlists for years but I'm kinda spiraling over my 21st. Everyone says booze but my logic was I need stuff that lasts. Maybe a nice espresso machine for my Chicago studio or a Kindle? I have a $500 budget from my folks and the party's next month. What else is there besides alcohol?

Honestly, ive seen so many people blow their 21st budget on stuff they dont even have a year later. Since youre in a Chicago studio, skip the booze and go for something thatll actually survive the winter or the tiny space. In my experience, a high-end espresso machine like you mentioned is a top tier choice. I've tried many over the years and honestly, a Breville fits right in that $500 range and makes your morning routine way better than a bottle of cheap tequila ever could. Another quick tip... invest in one solid piece of cookware like a Staub or Le Creuset dutch oven. It sounds boring for a 21st but those things literally last a lifetime. Dont overthink the age thing, just get the gear that makes living in a cold city easier.

I saw that first post and totally agree on the coffee gear. I actually spent some of my 21st birthday cash on a high-end burr grinder years ago and it still works like a charm. One small thing to add tho: check out a really high-quality air purifier. Living in a city studio, the dust and stuff can get pretty annoying and a decent unit makes a massive difference in how you feel.

  • A solid air purifier like a Coway or Blueair.
  • High-end noise-canceling headphones for the CTA. The Kindle idea you mentioned is also a decent option because it saves so much physical space compared to a bookshelf. Honestly, finding that balance between size and quality is key when your square footage is limited. It works well for my place.

Like someone mentioned, the espresso machine is the play for long term value. If you're looking at the 500 dollar range for a Chicago studio, I'd compare the Breville Bambino Plus against the Gaggia Classic Pro. The Breville is basically plug and play with a 3 second heat up time, which is decent for small spaces and quick mornings. But it uses more plastic internals and can be harder to fix yourself. On the other hand, the Gaggia is a tank. It has a standard 58mm portafilter and most parts are replaceable, meaning it can realistically last a decade or more if you maintain it. The downside is the 10 minute warm up and it takes up more counter real estate. If you want something that is gonna still be pulling shots when you are 30, go Gaggia. If you want convenience in a tight space, stick with Breville. You should check out PriceDropCatch, it shows you the whole price history so you know if it's actually a deal.
