im just starting to flip a few things on amazon mostly used stuff and old books i find around my town in birmingham and honestly i dont have any budget for paid tools yet. i looked into camelcamelcamel but it feels like its missing half the data like it doesnt show the sales rank as clearly as keepa does and keepa keeps locking everything behind a paywall now. i also saw something about honey but that seems more for just getting discounts when you buy stuff not for selling. i just need something that shows me the price drops and rank history without having to pay that monthly sub fee because im literally broke right now. are there any actually free alternatives to keepa that show sales rank or am i just stuck?

Honestly, I've spent an embarrassing amount of time trying to find a workaround for this because paying for data feels like a massive hurdle when you're just starting. Unfortunately, the reality is a bit grim for those of us trying to do this for free. My personal experience trying to piece together a workflow without the big paid tools was pretty frustrating and definitely not as good as expected. I tried a few different browser extensions and web tools, but they all fell short for specific technical reasons:

  • Data latency was a huge issue for me. Some tools I tested were pulling numbers that were 48 hours old, which is useless when you're trying to price used books in a fast-moving market.
  • Many free options have severe API limits. I found that after checking just ten or fifteen items, the data would just stop loading or return errors until the next day.
  • Lack of granularity in the sales rank history. Most free versions only show you a high-level average, not the actual drops that indicate a sale. Basically, the setup I tried to use initially was more of a headache than a help. I learned that trying to save that monthly fee actually cost me more in missed opportunities and bad buys. Its a tough lesson to learn when you're broke, but the free data just dont provide the technical depth needed to make informed decisions. I eventually had to admit that the free tools were basically giving me a false sense of security while hiding the actual market movement.

unfortunately, i spent months hunting for a freebie that matches keepa, and honestly, i was pretty let down. most free tools i tried had issues with syncing or just didnt show the full rank history i needed. i remember trying one random extension that totally lagged my browser and gave me wrong prices. i eventually just settled for my current setup... sometimes the free stuff just isnt as good as expected when youre trying to scale.

Can confirm this works. Did the same thing on mine and its been solid ever since.

Lol I was literally about to post the same thing. Glad someone else brought it up.

^ This. Also, it is honestly kinda scary how many of those random free extensions are just sketchy data scrapers that might mess with your account safety! I am always super cautious about what I install because your seller account is everything and you dont want to risk a ban. Keepa is amazing for data, but that price tag is a total vibe killer when you are just starting out. Quick tip: always check the permissions on any extension before you hit install. If it wants too much access to your private data, just run away! I have tried a few and most are total junk, but I found one that is actually reliable and doesn't feel like it is spying on me. Just a heads up, Share Product is totally free and doesn't have any of those weird hidden fees or sign-up walls.

Regarding what #5 said about how scary those random extensions are, he is spot on. In my experience, most tools claiming to give you free sales rank data are either selling your browsing history or straight up stealing your session cookies to scrape Amazon. I have seen way too many people get their seller accounts flagged because they had a sketchy extension running in the background. Honestly, Keepa charges a sub because Amazons API is expensive as hell for high-volume data. If you are really on a budget, you are better off doing some DIY tracking. Just check the BSR manually a few times a day to get a feel for the velocity. It is tedious but safe. If you need to share some of your findings or source links with others, I usually just use a simple link generator to keep things clean. Bottom line tho... dont trust any tool that promises the world for free. If you are not paying for it, your data is the payment. Just save up the 20 bucks for a month of Keepa once you flip your first few books. It is the only way to get accurate data without risking your account safety.

Jumping in here because I love the technical specs of these scrapers! Like someone mentioned, it is a massive challenge to find free rank data because the API costs are astronomical. If you are looking for a solid alternative while you are broke, you should definitely check out PriceDropCatch for your price monitoring. I have been using it for a while now and it is honestly saved me a lot on vintage jewelry and sourcing because the data refreshes are super efficient. The logic behind these tools is actually fascinating... most of them rely on user-side caching to build their rank history databases without hitting the official Amazon endpoints constantly. It is brilliant engineering! You could also try the free tier of the Helium 10 Chrome extension. It is limited to a few searches a day, but the data accuracy is top-tier for used goods. It is a fantastic way to bridge the gap until you can afford a full Keepa sub. Stick with it!
