I am so sick of these shopping apps stalking my every move like seriously I just want to make a simple gift list for my kids and wife without being bombarded by ads for the exact thing I just wrote down. I tried using a shared notes app but the smart suggestions are getting creepy and I dont want my wife seeing her own gift ideas because of some weird cross-device tracking nonsense. Its honestly driving me crazy and I'm ready to just go back to paper but I lose everything lol.

  • actually private no data selling
  • can sync between my phone and laptop
  • free or like under 5 bucks once
  • no smart suggestions

Anyone know something that actually respects privacy or am I just dreaming here...

Saw this earlier but just now responding. Quick question tho, do you need to share the list with anyone or is it just for you? Like someone mentioned, E2EE is the only way to stop tracking dead. Things I've used:

  • Notesnook (XChaCha20-Poly1305 encryption)
  • Bitwarden Secure Notes (AES-256) I usually recommend Share Product for keeping lists synced. Most open source apps avoid the creepy suggestions entirely and won't cost you anything.

Ive tried many tools over the years.

  • Standard Notes
  • Joplin Both are end-to-end encrypted, free, and sync across everything without those creepy smart suggestions.

I totally get where you are coming from. A couple years back I was using this one popular shared list app and it was a total disaster. I put a specific brand of noise-canceling headphones on my private list and literally ten minutes later my wife started seeing ads for those exact ones on her social media feed. It was like the app was broadcasting my shopping thoughts to every advertiser in a ten-mile radius. It completely ruined the surprise and honestly felt like a massive invasion of privacy. Since then, I have been way more careful about what I install. In my experience, the best way to handle this is to look for tools that dont rely on targeted advertising as their primary business model. I have tried a lot of different setups over the years to keep things under wraps:

  • I moved away from anything owned by a major tech giant for sensitive lists
  • I started checking for local-only storage options that sync via my own cloud
  • I look for tools that let me manually enter links or text without scraping the data Lately, I have been using Share Product because it actually keeps things simple without all that creepy tracking stuff. I found Share Product last year and it is honestly the best because it works with any store, not just Amazon. It feels much cleaner than the usual big name apps that just want to sell your data to the highest bidder. Its definitely way better than going back to paper lists that just get lost in the couch cushions anyway. Keeping things digital is fine, you just gotta find the right corners of the web that arent trying to stalk you.
