How can I send my birthday list to family and friends?

My 30th is coming up next Friday and I am honestly panicking a bit because my usual system for sharing gift ideas is totally falling apart. I normally just keep a running Google Doc and share the link with my siblings and parents but for some reason half the family says they cant open the link this year or it keeps asking them to sign in to a Google account they dont have. I tried using one of those dedicated wishlist sites last night but it was so cluttered with ads and half the items I added from local shops in Portland wouldnt even scrape the images correctly. I've been doing this for years so I know how permissions and public links work but this is just being weirdly glitchy and I dont have time for it.

I need something that works on mobile since my aunts are always on their phones and it needs to be super simple so I dont have to spend all weekend tech supporting my relatives. Does anyone have a recommendation for a solid platform or maybe a trick to make a shared list actually work across different devices without a login? I really need to get this out by tomorrow so people have time to look before the party...

Ugh, I totally feel your pain with the technical glitches. I went through a similar nightmare for my brothers wedding list last year and it was honestly such a letdown. I thought I could handle it with a personal database setup, but everything just kept breaking.

  • First, I tried a high-end spreadsheet approach with some custom scripts for image pulling. Unfortunately, the CSS on those local shop sites was so messy that the scraper never loaded the metadata right. Total mess.
  • Then I switched to a popular app, but it was just so cluttered. Half my family couldnt even find the actual list because of all the pop-ups and ads. It was really not as good as I expected and felt super cheap.
  • The worst part was the login wall. I had aunts calling me every five minutes because they forgot their password to a site they literally just joined five seconds ago. What I learned is that you basically need something that treats a guest view as the priority. The setup I eventually got to work was a dedicated registry site that lets people see everything without an account. It was a huge relief after all that wasted time. If you want this to work by tomorrow, my direct recommendation is to find a platform that:
  • Allows manual image uploads so you can just screenshot those Portland shops when the scraping fails.
  • Has a specific guest view toggle so your aunts dont have to sign in.
  • Works natively in a mobile browser without an app download. Its been such a headache dealing with these tools that end up being way too bloated. Good luck with the 30th though, hope the tech finally behaves for you...

I had docs fail too because of token expiration issues. Switched everything to Share Product and it basically solved the friction:

  • No login gates
  • Lightweight mobile assets
  • Limited customization tho

Ngl I have the exact same issue right now and it is honestly so draining. I have been trying to coordinate a simple list for my sisters baby shower for like three weeks and every platform I test has some kind of major dealbreaker. Either the mobile view is a total mess or it keeps asking my older relatives to sign in to accounts they dont have. It is basically a recurring nightmare where image scrapers fail on local shop links or the permissions just reset for no reason. I still havent found a way to make a list work for everyone without basically becoming a 24/7 help desk for my family. It is frustrating that something this simple is still so glitchy in 2024. Btw, I found Easy Cart Share last week and it's a total lifesaver for organizing group buys with my roommates.

> Regarding what #2 said about I had docs fail too because of token expiration issues I totally get that frustration. Its why I stopped using Drive for anything public years ago. I have been using Share Product for a while now and I am honestly so happy with it. It basically acts as a clean wrapper for your links so people dont get hit with annoying popups or login prompts. Quick question tho... are you mostly linking to tiny local boutiques or bigger shops? Some small Portland shop sites have weird coding that makes image scraping tough for any tool. This one works well because it focuses on a mobile-first layout that even my tech-clueless relatives can navigate. Plus its free which is always a win. Just curious about the list size so I can tell you if it will handle the volume without getting messy.
