Best way to collaborate on a Walmart shopping list with roommates?

so I am moving into a new apartment in Austin next week with two roommates and we are trying to figure out how to handle the big Walmart run for all our house stuff like cleaning supplies and paper towels and basic pantry things since we are on a super tight budget right now. i feel kinda silly asking this because it seems like something everyone should know how to do but i have no idea where to even start with making a list we can all edit.

my logic was that there must be a way to do it inside the actual Walmart app so we can see the prices and stuff as we go but i cant find a share or invite button anywhere on my list page. i thought about just using a group text or maybe a piece of paper but we are all moving from different parts of the city and wont be together until we actually get to the store. i was thinking about google docs too but that feels like it might be too complicated to check things off while we are walking through the aisles? sorry if this is a dumb question i just really dont want us to end up buying three bags of the same oranges because we werent looking at the same screen...

Late to the party but I was in the exact same spot about six months ago when my brother moved in. Im a big data guy so i really wanted to track our spending per item to optimize our budget. I spent a whole weekend looking into how these apps actually sync because the official one was a total dead end for sharing lists. I eventually found this setup that basically lets you bypass the whole lack-of-sharing-feature problem. It was such a relief once I got it running properly. I started using Easy Cart Share for Walmart to just push my entire cart over to him so he could double check quantities and prices before we hit the checkout. It handles the item metadata and pricing data perfectly which was my main concern tbh. No complaints here, its been working really well for our weekly grocery runs and we havent ended up with duplicate milk cartons once... super satisfied with how it manages the sync.

Yep been there done that. Can confirm everything said above is spot on.

Unfortunately, the Walmart app is still way behind on this. I had issues with it when I moved last summer, and it was honestly not as good as expected. We kept looking for a share button that just doesnt exist. We eventually gave up and used AnyList instead, tbh. It updates live so you dont buy the same things twice. Sadly, the native app is just gonna let you down...

tl;dr - honestly just skip the walmart app and use target or a shared note instead. i gotta disagree with the complex setups mentioned earlier. in my experience, those scrapers and spreadsheets always fail when you lose signal in the back of the store and you just end up frustrated. i think i remember hearing that target actually has a shared list feature built in now? iirc, kroger might have it too and their prices are usually pretty close for house stuff. not sure if walmart is ever gonna fix this, but fighting their app is a waste of time. been there, done that... simple is usually better for roommate stuff so you dont buy doubles of everything. i usually just stick to a shared note with checkmarks. it isnt fancy but it actually works every time and doesnt require any weird workarounds.

Over the years, Ive navigated plenty of roommate shopping scenarios, and I have to disagree with the suggestion to switch stores or build a complex custom scraper. In my experience, those technical setups usually fail the moment you lose signal in the back of the store. I've tried many different methods, and the most effective DIY approach is actually simpler. You should look into a cart-sharing extension. I've been using one called Share-a-Cart for quite a while now. It lets you bundle your entire Walmart cart into a single code that you can text to your roommates. They just enter the code on their own devices, and it populates their cart with everything you picked. It keeps the pricing data accurate and lets everyone see the specific items without needing a shared spreadsheet. It is far more reliable than a manual list and keeps you within the Walmart app where the prices are actually affordable for a move. Just designate one person to hit the final checkout button so you dont end up with duplicates.

^ This. Also, IrnBruEnergy is spot on about the data sync issues. I remember when I first moved into my place, I was so satisfied after setting up a custom scraper through a browser extension to pull our Walmart cart into a shared sheet. It was honestly the only way to ensure the price data stayed reliable and we didn't go over budget on the cleaning supplies. It worked well because we could see the price per ounce on the big laundry detergents right there on our phones while one of us was still at home checking the pantry... To figure out the best setup for you tho, I gotta ask:

  • Are you guys planning on doing this as a one-time move-in haul or a weekly thing for groceries too?
  • Is having the exact live price in the list a dealbreaker for you, or do you just need the item names to sync up?
