Look, I am losing my mind trying to organize this family reunion. We have about 15 of us heading up to a cabin in Lake Tahoe next month and the group chat is just a disaster of random Amazon links and screenshots of things people think we need for the kitchen and the kids' rooms. I tried to make a master list on my account to keep track of everything like the bulk toilet paper and the specific snacks my sister wants, but honestly doing it all myself is becoming a full time job I dont have time for.
I spent like an hour yesterday trying to figure out how to just let everyone add their own stuff to one single list so I can just hit buy all or whatever at the end of the month. I went into the settings and saw an invite button but it’s so vague. I read on one help page that you can invite collaborators which sounds like what I want, but then I saw a different thread on Reddit from like 2022 saying that only the person who started the list can actually add stuff and everyone else can just look at it? That literally makes no sense if it’s called a collaboration.
Then I saw something about Alexa lists being different than Shopping lists and now I’m just completely lost. My budget for the supplies is around $500 and I really dont want to accidentally buy double of everything because my cousin couldn't see what I already added or because she had to make her own separate list. Does anyone actually know if there is a way to make a list where my mom, my sister, and my cousins can all log in—well not log in to my account obviously—but use their own accounts to add items directly to my list? Or is Amazon really this behind on basic sharing features? I just need a way for multiple people to actually add items, not just view a list I made... it’s driving me crazy.
I've messed around with these lists for trips and it gets tricky. Before you go further, are you paying for the whole cart yourself or do you need people to pay you back? Make sure to consider:
Just catching up here! I handled a 20-person dev retreat and loved the data side of it!
Organizing a group that big is a total nightmare, so I feel your pain. Over the years, I've handled a few big family events, and I can tell you it definitely works once you find the right toggle. Reliability was my main concern initially, but in my experience, the system holds up well. I was super skeptical at first because I didnt want my budget ruined or to end up with twenty packs of napkins. Here is what I learned from my own setup last year:
