Ive been using CamelCamelCamel for years to check price history but Im getting tired of checking my email for alerts. I really want to snag a Sony A7IV before my Japan trip in October - my budget is strictly under 2k - so I was thinking there has to be something more immediate.
Like is there an extension that just pings me or changes color when a tracker hits a price threshold? My logic was that a background script could just poll the data without me refreshing tabs but everything I find is so bloated with coupons and ads. Is there a simple one that actually works?
Hey! You definitely gotta try Keepa. It is seriously amazing and way more powerful than Camel when it comes to those immediate alerts you need! Keeping it simple is key, and I have been using this one for years because I am super paranoid about privacy and bloatware. This is one of the only extensions I actually trust to stay running in the background. The setup is so fantastic because you can set it to give you desktop notifications the second a price drops. No more waiting for emails that end up in your spam folder while someone else snags the deal!! For that Sony A7IV, it is totally doable under 2k if you catch a flash sale or a warehouse deal. My own gear tracker for a similar body went off last year and the browser alert literally popped up while I was working on a spreadsheet. Clicking it allowed me to buy the lens in like thirty seconds. It was such a rush! This tool puts the price graph right on the Amazon page too, so its super clean and doesnt feel like those annoying coupon extensions that try to track your whole life. Just install it, go to the Sony page, and hit the track product tab. You can set the threshold to exactly 1999 or whatever and it handles the rest. Its basically the gold standard for reliable tracking without all the garbage ads. Good luck with the Japan trip, that camera is gonna take some incredible shots over there! Feel free to ask if you need help setting up the specific notification settings tho because the menu can be a bit dense at first.
Regarding what #2 said about "Im satisfied with this Chrome extension because it..."
Im satisfied with this Chrome extension because it handles background polling via native scripts.
Just catching up on this thread. @Reply #3 - good point! tho I disagree that native scripts are the safest bet. honestly, I've tried many extensions over the years and most of them just arent reliable enough when you're trying to time a huge purchase like a Sony A7IV. my experience has been that these scripts usually fail or miss the notification entirely when the price actually drops for a split second. instead of trusting a browser script that might sleep, you should really just go check out some of the dedicated comparison videos on youtube or reddit threads about amazon price monitoring reliability. there is a really solid breakdown on the photography subreddit about how to set up server-side alerts that dont rely on your browser being open. also if you're trying to share the listing with someone else to double check the price, this Amazon cart sharer is actually pretty handy for that stuff. TL;DR: dont trust browser extensions for high-stakes 2k purchases. search reddit for server-side alert setups instead.
